Designing for a Good Cause

I work as Communication Coordinator for the First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville, AR, where my husband, Mark McDonald, is senior pastor. I have been designing for the church for the last two years and have found it interesting how few companies or designers offer products or tutorials geared specifically toward church communities and their needs. I have found that it is easier to create what I need from scratch so that I can meet the specific promotion needs of our church, and I would like to help other church communicators and designers to do the same.

I know that I like to see how other designers work so I thought I would show you some of the custom design work I have done for our church and discuss a bit about how the designs were created in Photoshop and InDesign. When possible, I will show you the original stock images so you can see part of the process.

I am working on a plan to allow other churches to use some of my designs, but currently all finished designs pictured on this blog are copywritten to me, Kelley Elizabeth McDonald, and can only be used if I grant permission to your church or non-profit. You may email me at kelleymcdonald@gmail.com. I download almost all of my royalty-free stock images from stock.xchng and those images are copywritten to those individual designers who have made their designs available free of charge. Thank you so much. Without stock.xchng, I would not be able to create many of my custom pieces.

Untouchable Series March-April 2009

Design Order: a graphic that has the feel of a 1920's mobster on the street at night that can be used as a bulletin cover and web banner to promote a Sermon Series titled the Untouchables.

Design Work: This design was created using seven royalty-free stock images: a lamp post, a spotlight, a leaning man, a hat and several images I used for texture and overlay effects. I altered the images in Photoshop so that the hat was on the man's head and he was leaning against the lamp post. I added the shading on the lamp post to create the illumination and designed the background to include the light moving from the lamp post across the design.  This design includes 11 layers.
